Well the usual method of doing something in Ubuntu that requires "root" privs is to use the "sudo" command in a Terminal. This is a slightly different approach than, say Windows, where you "log in" as an Administrator.

If you can tell us exactly what it is you want to do that is requiring root privs, we can give you the exact command you need to use in a Terminal and you'll see just how easy this is. It's just a little different.

im using VMWare.
i'm trying to run this installer through the terminal but i need 'superuser' privs.

/home/adam/Desktop/1/vm/vmware-install.pl

i've done this before in openSuse and it worked perfect... but this is apparently different.

I'm no expert with the CLI but try...

Code: Select all
sudo /home/adam/Desktop/1/vm/vmware-install.pl

You'll be prompted for your password... Enter it, press return, you should be good to go if the command structure is correct.

Otherwise, you might just need to go into the directory where the install file resides and then:

Code: Select all
sudo vmware-install.pl

I will tell you it IS possible to log in to your Ubuntu session as "root" but this is

1) totally unnecessary (see how easy it was to use "sudo"?) and
2) hugely compromises your system's security

That being the case, the wise Ubuntunite will learn to use sudo.

Sudo is your friend.

Sudo will keep you warm and dry on cold rainy days.

Sudo ensures you always have correct change.

You will learn to wield sudo with precision and skill.

You will stamp out the souls of your enemies, laughing at their fear as you stand tall, sudo at the ready! It will level your foes with it's laser like precision and unstoppable power! All the while doing bowing to your ULTIMATE BIDDING!! As such, your name will strike fear into those that hear it and your shadow will stretch far...

You'll think of me every time you sudo something. How nice.

Remind me to PM you to remind me to bitch-slap you at some point in the future.
