That is what happened to me once I installed the AMD drivers.

I'm going to boot into terminal and try to install a different display manager. Failing that back to 4.2. or Mint

Hi Xxjoker21xX,

I have two questions.

1, I can't seem to get Ultimate Edition 4.6 to boot into live on my new pc. I have been able to boot Mint and other Ubuntu base distros and install them but then they crash. Ultimate Edition will not boot at all. This is on USB.

My pc is a z170 board core i76700k, 16GB ddr4 ram and 970gtx, I know it's new hardware so I thought it maybe a compatibility issue.

2, I have installed Windows 7 on it, in legacy mode without any trouble. Windows is on it's own HDD and I want Ultimate Edition on another. If I can boot Ultimate Edition from a DVD and get it installed should I put grub on the windows partition?

I hope that this post makes sense.

Thank you.

Barney

Can you be more specific, or even a pic showing the Ubuntu flavors crashing? Any errors or messages? I'm just going to take an educated guess here, but i would imagine the only things that would give you issues booting a live DVD, would be an inconsistency in the ISO (you can test with built in feature from menu), your gpu and/or monitor. Please refer to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions for kernel boot instruction and options you can try from the Live DVD and let us know if you still are having issues. <BREW>

Hi,

To be more specific, say I can boot Mint 17 even install it but on the restart it just goes black before the login screen comes up. With Ultimate it will boot to the "Try live disk or install now etc) once I click on a option it just goes blank.

I will continue trying different set up’s I was more wondering if it was just a new hardware thing you know needing a newer kernel.

I will get back to you after I work more on it.

I was also reading that I should disconnect my windblows hdd boot into a live disk (if I can) install linux onto the separate hdd with add grub boot loader on that one, plug windows back in, then select computer to boot from linux hdd and windows should be their in grub like the good old days?
Now does that sound right?

Thank you all for your help.

Oh xxjoker, I have never really ventured away from ext2, ext3, ext4 so I will have to read up on this xfs. I don't cope with change too well.

At the Ultimate Edition boot screen try nomodeset parameter.

Check in BIOS:
Booting from USB as first option.
If you have option to choose between internal GPU and PCIE GPU...choose PCIE.

Hi Pam,

Sorry is the PCIE the Nvidia GPU?

OK, first thank you to all for your help.

I have been able to boot and run a live version of Xubuntu 15.10 beta2 on a USB (made by ThumbOS) by turning off the Nvidia card from bios and running on-board graphics, the only problem I have is when the disk is live there is no Ethernet connection, in fact my card is not even seen but I did read that with the new 4.3 kernel that there will be more support for this?

This is my MB

ASRock Fatal1ty Z170-Gaming K6+ Motherboard

It says killer LAN which I'm not sure what that is but it is a pain in the bum even on Win7 it take a little time to connect.
