Most people who use vyatta say its better than flashing routers with ddwrt/openwrt/tomato-usb etc.
Vyatta is a good project, that is a dedicated network OS based on -- linux. It provides security and all routing mechanisms to build a low-cost, low-power consumption custom made router out of a computer or other small form factors.

To use this ill need DSL connected to x86 (or some pc) which is connected to a switch if i have to make a router isin't ?

You are right. For now it serves no practical purpose unless as a hobby or someone who is obsessed with security and wants to implement own rules with iptables/nftables for the same.
With Cisco's CEO current take on NSA monitoring and how its affected business for them because they weren't interested in making and implementing standards making it easy for them(nsa) to snoop.
They were the first guys; who allowed flashing their routers with linux based ddwrt to extend range, lower latency for their WRT series.
Asus already sells DDWRT compliant routers...
