neways to check which display managers you have..
Code: Select all
ls /etc/init.d/ |grep dm

it will show you which display managers are installed like lightdm, kdm etc etc(the others are different init scripts and not related) ...

Lite is already ready to go pretty much but if you do install from 3.4 lite you need to lose yarrsr,
.

Yea, just want the option for KDE, as 3.4lite is Gnome2 only

Technically, for the purposes of this, we must view 3.4 lite desktop as "Mate", although there are some changes made. There is XBMC, but I don't technically count this either.

so i'm lost here, am I supposed to login to a Mate session?

it means you only got the lightdm display manager installed...
if you want kdm dm install it..
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install kdm

after installation kdm may prompt you to select a default display manager.....choose which one you want....
if you get no prompts do it manually as follows:
Code: Select all
sudo dpkg-reconfigure kdm

now choose which to use...

No, Mate is the desktop that is on 3.4 lite, not Gnome 2.

Did you see this during install?

If not, you probably did install wrong. KDM installs either way, it is the option to choose, not install, and you do not need kdm. Lightdm is fine.

Let me clarify

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install kdm

is indeed how one would install kubuntu display manager(kdm) but this isn't really going to matter, because if you entered command
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install kde-full
already you would have installed kdm automatically. Whether you choose it or not is of no consequence if you did your backports right, which during install you would know because

kdeinstall3.png

you can read it.

After kdm inquiry you will encounter

these questions.

I saw that window during install, that is the one I was referring to. I must have missed the options and closed out! That's all I can figure. I'll have to retry!

Closing out means you canceled install. This would be something not to do.

Ignore post within picture lol, I deleted when I had trouble loading session, which was infinitely more stressful, but solution is easy enough, after finding it.

Ok I tried this option and now the computer boots to a command prompt. If I try to go back to lightdm the computer will attempt to boot but hangs at the desktop

I'd like to think that this pc just doesn't want to run KDE but before Ultimate Edition 3.4 I was running the KDE version of Mint with no problems.

Well, none of that will help you.

Sorry. ok, what happened is a cancelled install, changing your dm is fine and all, but let's get back to the KDE Plasma Desktop. Not the Kubuntu Display Manager.
