Advice please for app testing??

Postby Tool » Thu May 09, 2013 2:57 pm

I was browsing Craigslist and found a posting for app testers. The guy claims that it will collect data such as gyroscope, accelorometer and such. He said I have to run it for 7 days and have to connect to wifi daily as the mobile network will not work for this app. He also asks for my device ID so that he can track the 7 days I have the app installed. I have the app, but it is not installed. I'm a little wary though. It could be collecting my personal data and if I'm not mistaken, with the proper knowledge and programs he could steal my phone by flashing another with my info. Any advice would be appreciated and if you are interested, I can send you the app to see what it's really doing. It was sent by email and is an apk

Thanks. I'm pretty sure it's safe now. I found the company and the list of permissions which are sensors only and to send data about what the sensors receive such as gyroscope and such. No permissions to access data from apps, contacts, browsers or anything of that nature.
Basically, it's a tester to retrieve instrument data for a program to run in a new app.

Ask him exactly what he means by device id's. I'm pretty sure he means your wireless mac address. You can always regenerate mac addresses. But on Android your device id is stored in the setting.db and depending on your phone this place can very. You can change it after with adb or download an app from google play to do this graphically...
