Wanted to get into Android for a while myself but couldn't justify the expense of a half decent tablet.
When Google released the Nexus 7 at a supposed $199 for 8Gb I thought ok, we're getting close.
But after all the fanfare died down and I looked at the delivered price in Australia ($249 for 8Gb and $299 for 16Gb plus delivery) and no external SD, no rear camera, no HDMI, I thought better of it.
Started doing the old interwebs research and came accross a company called 'Ainol'. Figured tablets were a pain in the (proverbial) so thought maybe this company's name was a sign.
Picked up the Novo 7 Flame, 16Gb, External Micro SD, HDMI, 5MB rear camera as well as front camera, everything else provided in the box, delivered for $152 AUD. Not too shabby. Build quality is great, 5 touch capacitive screen, brushed aluminium back, looks good.
All I wanted it for was to play around.
Had a bit of chat with TheeMahn - he only just got his tablet back. Suggested he try porting UE3.5 on his and I'd do the same with Black Opal on mine and we'd compare notes.
Few pics:

Certainly usable but far from release quality.
Ultimate Android may not be too far away. ;)

Cheers.

faced the same problem as you ...but i had to see if its going to be nexus 7 vs tab 2 vs galaxy 10.1

nexus 7 seemed perfect....but like you said it has everything inside but nothing outside.

tab 2 is on its way out..

galaxy 10.1 is way out of my league $$.

Will wait a year to see if something really breaks the ice.

Just got finished unbricking my Prime, the wife got carried away and flashed 4.1.2 with a newer bootloader version and crushed it. I can't be mad at her for trying, as she is pretty damn computer literate. She manages my ftp server's and cloud server. Been using SId on the prime in chroot but i just cant settle running it like that. Everything works except sound and to launch software i have to run it from a terminal. I hear VM software is being developed to run on android. Now a virtual machine would be an alternative i would choose. (driver compatibility and such)

No. Not Ultimate Android. My androids are not handicapped. It is an opinionated actual fact. Or an actual factual opinion. Android OS is far superior and lighter than Ubuntu. I do not have six Canonicals. I have Androids. and they rock. unlike my mastery of present day english. Anywho. I am aware of XDA and XDA is what made me aware of Linux to the extent of working with Androids. They are actually easier to work with on XP because of XDA and then the irony comes full circle when you see something that says Linux on Android. Thankfully, Android has gone back to the Linux Kernel(there is $ involved in this, opensource does not mean no $) and now we can continue. How about Ultimate Android? Not Ultimate Ubuntu. On the desktop and on the mobiles. Why not? It was designed for X86 and what has 64 bit addressing really brought us so far?
