Connecting Samsung Galaxy s3 / Android IceCream Sandwitch

Postby Zaileion » Mon Sep 03, 2012 6:56 pm

I recently upgraded from iPhone to a Galaxy s3, thinking it would be an easy transition since I've been slowly transitioning from windows to Linux. At this point I've almost no reason to switch back to my Windows partition except now Android uses an MTM connection thingy, and i have no idea how to make it work. I've scoured the web looking for answers, and can only find a few sites of which none help. i installed Gmpt, and several other mtp software packages, but none of them work. Its really ticking me off because I switched to Android specifically to avoid Windows... :x Anyway, it seems Ubuntu 12.04 cannot connect to Android at this time, and was wondering if any of my fellow Ultimate Edition users has any information.

Yes, ive tried every suggestion available on the first 3 pages of the followig search engins, following the instructions to a "T".
here are the links ive already tried:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/146529/h ... s3-via-usb
http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy ... ailed.html
http://techsplurge.com/10486/enable-usb ... galaxy-s3/

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2030732

and i think i tried more, but i cant remember what my exact searches were.

Any help would be super appriciated. Im to the point here i willing to provide financial compensation for anyone who can fix this for me. directly and with specific and precise instructions...

I don't currently have an SD card inserted into my S3. I don't have a Micro-SD since iPhone doesn't need one, and after i noticed it doesn't connect i haven't purchased one yet. could that be the problem? Must i have an SD card to connect, is the internal memory not mountable? i dont think this is necessary, as the S3 comes with a 16GB and a 32GB internal. it would be kind of useless to get a 32GB version if its not mountable... also, it mounts and is fully functional in Windows.

Ok try plugging your phone in and changing from "MTP" to "PTP" , a notification should pop up when you plug your phone in :)

If that don't work look at this http://research.jacquette.com/jmtpfs-exchanging-files-between-android-devices-and-linux/
i personally have not tried it but since i have the GS3 i will test when i get home

tried the Dual Mount SD Widget, and no luck. it shows up in the file tree in Nautilus, but when i click on it i get the error in the attached screen shot.

I'm dying here, please help!! My 1.5 years renewal time was not up yet, so i had to buy the phone outright. if it doesn't work, i might as well thrown the $ right out the window.

Furthermore, i've tried it on Ubuntu 12.04 (just the standard distro) and Mint 13. no luck on any of them.. I hate Windows, it just works, and it makes me hate it even more...

I also tried switching to PTP, no luck. i also tried to download and install the SGS3 Easy UMS, which is supposed to activate a USB Mass Storage on the phone, but it didnt work either...

here is the screen shot, it didnt load for some reason the first time
Edit:
i guess the screenshot isnt going to load. anyway it says:

Unable to mount SMASUNG_ANDROID_SPG-L710
Error Intitallizing Camera: -1 Unspecified error

ALso tried the above suggested link, i followed the instructions to the "T" and same error.
i tried this link: http://research.jacquette.com/jmtpfs-ex ... and-linux/

Gotta say Ultimate Edition 3.4 is Fantastic, after working with it for a few weeks, and customizing Compiz, its by far the best Ultimate Yet. all though 2.6 is a close runner-up.

There is an inbuilt application called "samsung kies" which opens up automatically once enabled.
But It uses wifi to connect to the computer and im assuming you might need a wifi dongle to connect with it(try with usb cable).
It will open up in the web browser and is fully compatible with UE3.4 and Blackopal64( underlying ubuntu 12.04).
It will do everything ...think of it as a palmtop manager/sync etc.
For multiple file transfers you might need to install java.

Yes there are weird problems with galaxy s generation phones.

i was able to connect earlier with it as a storage device but then it stopped, tried for a day, gave up and i just dont have the time to look into it.
Am still certain its a minor problem.
