Transparent Themes for Gnome any clues?

Transparent Themes for Gnome any clues?

Postby BBOSAK2143 » Tue Sep 17, 2013 5:34 pm

Got more wizards here than anywhere as I always say! Now, I messed with the transparent aspects for a Cinnamon theme and would like to do the same for a Gnome 3.8 theme. Anyone with some good clues, please send them my way! At present have only been able to get a few aspects of the theme to become transparent. Of course is not even 1/4 done. Still as am no pro at all this, all input will be greatly appreciated. Just want to make some real art for themes! Getting bored of seeing the same stuff for the past year, time for a change! Anyone in, please drop a line. Thanks!!!

Thanks very much and will say you have yourselves to blame! I see so much enthusiasm here, it just rubbed right off onto me! Thanks for keeping this site that way always! Is a hard one trying for, been on it a week straight, changed the gtk and not getting the desired effects so much at all! Have more ideas, but figure as so many people on here have such brilliant ideas, I would check. Also thought I could beat notifications in the message tray of Gnome Shell, but thus far no luck. If you ever notice with Gnome shell, bottom task bar never changes, least the messages on the inside. It is always black on Gnome and white on Gnome Classic. Can not change text coloring in there either! Lines of code did nothing for it! So am suspecting might be inside the Gnome Desktop program itself, just not sure. Still all this is awesome as am learning. College is nice, but never concentrates on anything specific! I also believe if you are working on something you enjoy, you learn more. I see a lot of that on here!!! Always great to be here!

Have you checked the 2nd link you refer to? When checked just a few minutes ago said it can not detect Gnome running on my system? Is a weird one! See on Gnome-looks I already uploaded shell that is transparent. I was totally curious about yes moving that notification to upper taskbar. Now would that also change the text color to what I have set? Or would I still be forced to look at the same system color of black notification box and white text on Gnome, white notification and gray text on Gnome classic. See those are the issues I want to cure. If you look at all the Gnome Shell themes on Gnome looks you will see thus far no one has cured that issue! Now, next thing you have me totally wowed with the picture at bottom that shows Chromium in a semi-transparent state! That point would definitely love and actually lust to know!!!! Have been at that for a week straight with next to nil results! That shows a gnome theme can be converted to transparent, and that is the biggest enchilada I am after! I see much of the same on Gnome looks and enjoy incorporating a little change! I know not everyone likes them, but for those of us that are bored with the same old, same old it's a welcome change. Pam, you sir keep so well apprised with everything! That is the most amazing fact I have ever seen anywhere!!!! Very exciting since you and I seem to welcome change with open arms!!!! We want to see advancement and is awesome! Always thanks for that! I uploaded a Cinnamon theme also that is transparent and enjoyed putting this in white & black text(R.I.P). Sounds a bit mean, not intended too, just merely the fact systems are more improved we no longer have to be forced to look at simple colors! Just wish I had more know how, am going to keep pushing and all links are deeply appreciated, those were once again better than I have seen and found! Very very swift, pam as always simply brilliant!!!

You are right, in the comments section most say they cant install it.

Gnome-shell is under heavy development. You can see its all(extensions) Beta. KDE 4.x was under development for over 8 years before becoming usable this year and winning all old users like myself back.
Gnome 3.x(gnome-shell) has come a long way when it was introduced back in 2011. In 2 years it has catapulted to great heights. Im most impressed by the gnome devs. From a naysayer, i firmly stand by them today.
The extensions are all mostly beta, which makes sense since it will be another 2 years since gnome becomes formally stable irrespective of any major internal changes. It already is usable. Most extensions are written by users like you/me and commiters. Likewise you may have noticed gnome 3.6 is not gnome 3.8. They are both different. Sort of like ironman building a replacement for his palladium reactor. Highly modularized and being continuously revised.

Unity went through the same phase and much later unity-tweak-tool got released which was a storm killer. No more tsunamis or shocks coming from Unity.

Tools will be built, automation will take centrestage when the modular structure of gnome becomes highly stable. Till then take a look around, sit back and watch or try building an extension....

Libnotify sure sounds like the culprit am after in shell! Now seems to me, if when in Gnome Flashback the bottom notification area is masked with the theme's colors, same should be able to hold true with shell once the right words are constructed! Of course since you have shed a little more light on this should get me a lot closer than have been!!! Have the script for Libnotify right now and will just have to go through it a bit to come up with a solution. Am sure people will enjoy that as puts a damper on shell themes when they are identical on the bottom taskbar no matter what the rest of the theme looks like! I suppose developers of Gnome felt it wasn't necessary to leave that open for choices. Not me, I like having a choice and see others do too! Was also once again messing with regular theme in Flashback and still hardly achieved any of the transparency aspects at all! I have rgba(0,0,0,0.1) in quite a bit of the theme and still appears quite solid! Wiped out all references to shades and just no real luck. There are only a few areas that look transparent and the rest solid as a regular theme! Aren't almost all desktops out there a form of beta? Seems to me is that way as is always moving quite fast when it comes to development! I just see the transparency aspect as a good solution for smaller devices and just hoping will get it right soon! Really appreciate the links. The join one, did that and never could email questions or anything to Gnome Developers. Was a drag to me as you know me, want to help out. Am definitely no genius, but maybe some of my ideas might be of use to them. Oh well, least I did try that part! Still as you always seem to be more on the track with information, any you come up with will be greatly appreciated!!!! Once again thanks pam, you're awesome and always leading me in the right direction!

Gnome panel is now filled with bugs. As time passes it will go unmaintained. As of now there are
active developers for solving problems for gnome-flashback. In the coming days and months dramatically different hardware will be released and all committers will focus their energy on that i.e gnome-shell.

The bugs with gnome-flashback may or may not be solved although its on a todo list.

You might want to look at something more practical like mate or even razor-qt.
Mate is full desktop that gives the feeling of gnome-2.x

Have razor will be looking at it more soon. Now mate I still have Micro's system with mate, but have not figured out what to do to change themes? Yes as I say here and there get a little proficient at some things then others have nothing! Yes am very very interested in Mate, I also have some old Gnome 2 systems that have to take a better look at. I just feel am heading down the right path with all this, but yes need that info on Mate as have a feeling is also part of the puzzle I am missing! Absolutely brilliant as always, you seem to always know where I am headed and need! Thanks again pam!!!!
