Fallout 3 Desktop Theme

Fallout 3 Desktop Theme

Postby Mastodonian » Sun Jun 02, 2013 4:07 pm

I'm a huge fan of the Fallout series (Yes! Even 1 and 2) and after seeing Necopost's futuristic desktop overhaul I had the idea of converting the desktop to a theme entirely based on the Terminals from Fallout 3.
(The Futuristic Desktop design: Part 1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ftpcHD3378 Part 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqxp9q5j-RA)

Example picture: Image

Part two was the one that gave me the inspiration for the design. I love seeing what cool designs and themes you can do with the Linux operating system and I love trying to create my own. With what I'm planning it would obviously take a long time and have quite a lot of bumps in the road. I'm still fairly new to the operating system, but hey! Everyone has to start somewhere. The information to make something like this is out there, you just have to go get it.

What I'm Planning: While part 2 was the one that gave me the inspiration for the design, I don't want the theme to look like that. Sure it looks cool, but for me at least, it doesn't have a lot in terms of user friendliness and useabillity on a daily basis. Sure using Gnome terminal as a fully functional desktop looks l337, and will impress your friends. but when you get down to it, it is probably more of a hastle to work with and do things I would do on a daily basis.

My idea is to combine the minimalism of the futuristic desktop design with the clashing quirky retro theme of the Fallout Terminal and just the right ammount of eye-candy to make it something that a geek like me can really nerd out on and still impress the crap out of my friends. Basically it should be something I can pick up and use at any time for any function while not being a hinderance.

I don't know if something has been done like this before (I did notice a Gnome wallpaper in the same design of the terminal), even if it has it probably wouldn't be similiar to what I have in my head. Anytime I search "Fallout Desktop Theme", or "Fallout Linux theme" I either just get gameplay, or the actual soundtrack.

Heres my idea of where to start: XFCE as a desktop enviroment (For the minimalistc aspects, or MATE, or even Gnome for it's flexibility) with a stable base. I was thinking about going with either Mint 13 or Debian 6, mostly Debian since I found a video showing how to install it from scratch. Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDVDZLEpKrw

I would either take the wallpaper design directly from an image (one I found: http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x296/legendary_bibo/gterminal.png) or just create mine from scratch, most likely the latter. I would like to have one that just focuses on the minimalism with the dark green and darkened borders. I don't know how this would work compared to the design in the Futuristic Desktop (part 2). I really like how you can see completely through the desktop when rotating in compiz, but I'm pretty sure he just installed Compiz as a stand alone desktop enviroment, I can't verify it though. (More info: http://www.necopost.com/2011/11/lightweight-linux-desktop-with-compiz.html )

As for other things, Compiz would be a must, Emerald would probably be used and I would look into it. I use dual monitors and one cool idea I had was to have the main desktop have any sort of links or desktop icons, while the second desktop would have all sorts of system monitors, such as Conky. I got this idea after seeing this guys desktop: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKf1pU-cpDI (It's based on Kubuntu, he rotates the desktop around and has all the system monitors on a workspace, I don't know if this is entirely possible with Compiz and using dual-monitors instead.)

As for input goes please leave some comments about what you think of the idea, or any input or ideas that would be cool to impliment. I'm going to start small with this project and work my way up, and maybe even add more and more to it as I go. <BREW>

I would ditch all of that, install the latest KDE..with whatever, Mint, Ultimate Edition, Ubuntu, Open Suse, Debian, doesn't really matter.

On to the Pipboy..which I guess is what you are going for...just pic the game, sample the colors with Gif, then apply the colors to System settings. The font is ridiculously easy..just google fallout font.

If you have 1 or 2, you should have plenty of wallpapers and things to sample from.

Alright, gotcha. While I haven't personally tried out KDE, it does seem to be the most flexible in terms of customization.

The wallpaper shouldn't be too hard to design. Fallout was always pretty minimalistic in terms of colors and I can always sample the colors as you said.

Darker theme for KDE!!! Yeah looking decent. Now crazy me, I would probably be doing the yellow thing to the text!!! Just think it shows good on dark colors and not as annoying as the white. Of course that is just me, and am on the crazy side!!! Would like to see more of it as I am a total sucker for themes and of course you know I mean the dark ones. Light ones bug my eyes!!!!!

The theme is mine. Thank You. I made it to go with the rest of the Diamond 2b Theme in Unity and Fallback..z gnomez. Dekorator, though, has a Fallout Window! Do not install this in your house.
