Making The Switch
Posted: Sat Aug 03, 2013 11:32 pmAfter dual-booting for a very long time I feel it's time to finally make the switch. I have become very sick of using Windows and the garbage that comes with it (my computer never included a CD-key so I get a nice message telling me to purchase an operating system I have already purchased, fancy that). 
My main setup is using Windows for gaming and Linux for everything else. After reading about the WINE program I have decided to give it a try. I don't know how my sound card would run with the setup on Linux (I currently don't know how to switch to my monitor speakers in Linux) my video card seems to handle most system processes just fine (it's a nVidia GTX 580).
I mainly play Dota 2, League of Legends, and a bunch of steam games. While the Linux steam games work just fine on my install, I don't know how I would set it up to run a normal Windows Steam install and play the games I have. There are several I would greatly miss (Fallout: New Vegas, Don't Starve, ect) if I couldn't set something like that up.
My question is; what can I really expect to get out of this? Will the games be laggy? Would i be able to play FPS and ping intensive games like DOTA? There are also some smaller programs I would miss, Fallout Mod Manager (FOMM). How is the video editing? I'm using Sony Vegas 12 as a main video editor, would that be able to work?
There are probably a few things I forgot to mention, but in a nutshell my question is how practical would be trying to use Linux for almost everything I would do on Windows?
I would be using Ultimate Edition 3.4 LITE as my main operating system for everything.
