Downloads from Sourceforge now zero or near zero length

Postby Rustum » Sat May 11, 2013 5:44 pm

I downloaded Ultimate Edition 3.5 64 bit from Sourceforge. It didn't pass the MD5 checksum test. I tried to download it again but it would only download 0 or just over zero bit size filesizes and then say it is done. In case it was the browser, I used Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome and Internet Explorer. None of these work. Is there a timelimit at Sourceforge for redownloads? I've never noticed this behavior before. I was able to get a bootable disk but the install kicks out with an error. I am working on a Windows 7 laptop. It's a Samsung RF510 laptop. The fact that it booted off the DVD implies that the drivers are there, at least that is my surmise. After the failed install from the booted up DVD image, it appeared that my hard drives were unaltered.

I discovered a post that listed other download sites including torrent and ftp downloads for the Ultimate Edition 3.5 version. I was able to download the 3.5 version that matched the MD5 hashtag which is great. I am now burning a DVD at 1X speed to minimize chance of failure. I am still curious if anyone else has seen the behavior from Sourceforge that I have described above. If this is normal and I was just unaware that is fine. However, my suggestion to the developers of Ultimate Edition is to use a different download site rather than Sourceforge as it is not unusual for an error to occur in a download of that size. Just a suggestion. I may very well donate if I like this distribution. I've only used Suse Linux in the past and and tried an very much earlier version of Debian but my video card at the time was not supported so I was not able to use it. ;)

+1 smeterlink.
Thanks.

Welcome to Ultimate Edition forums, Rustum.
Direct downloads are absolutely unreliable. Large file transfers are better off with torrents or ftp transfers.
With torrents, the hash is automatically checked, so even large downloads are practically immune to power outages or any fatal crashes as long as disk is intact.
The problem you face is typical of direct downloads. If you are on a broadband(wireless), its even worse.
Torrents are the only solution.
